Jigsaw Puzzles & A Swear Jar: Democratic Convention Chief Prepares For Philly

NPR

Who would you turn to to build a temporary city that will come to life for four days, then disappear? That’s what planning and managing a national political convention amounts to, and the Democrats have turned to a Pentecostal minister and jigsaw puzzle master with a gift for organization and politics.

The Rev. Leah Daughtry was CEO of the 2008 convention, remembered for Barack Obama’s speech in Denver’s football stadium. Now the party has turned to her to handle the one in Philadelphia next summer.

It feels as if a cloak of darkness has just been lifted! Who are you Ms. Daughtry and why am I "just now" finding your clear and wonderful voice? Just happened upon your name while signing up to volunteer with the DNC 2016. I am overjoyed with reading the history of your upbringing and subsequent journey. Can't wait to share your story with my children. We are all valuable and so much stronger when we walk/work/build together. Can't wait to get started! Thank you, Pam D.

Part of Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Weekend

The Black Church has played a central role in civil rights since the founding of the United States. Black faith leaders have been at the forefront of each of the most significant social movements that have improved the lives of all Americans — from abolition to Jim Crow. Today’s civil rights agenda is multi-pronged and encompasses additional facets- ensuring law enforcement and judicial fairness, economic justice, and upholding human and constitutional rights for all. This session will bring together some of the preeminent Black clergy, faith leaders, and activists to discuss the role of today’s Black Church as leaders in the New Civil Rights movement for the 21st Century and beyond.
