"And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it ... and shall trust in the LORD. "

A New Song

The new year is upon us, and with it comes new perspective. Setting new goals requires reflection on where we’ve been and what we’ve been through. Often, it is in looking back that we have the clearest picture of our real accomplishments … the obstacles we’ve overcome, the rivers we’ve crossed, the mountains we’ve climbed. Seems like we are often so busy climbing the mountain that we don’t realize how high and steep the mountain was until we get to the top and look down at the valley. Then we revel in our accomplishment! Look at that! I didn’t know I could do it!

The Psalmist has the same experience … only it is with God. He looks back on his life, remembers who he was and where he came from, and gives thanks to God for changing his life and giving him direction. And he credits God with his newfound sense of thanksgiving: He has put a new song in my mouth! In other words: all that God has brought me through, and all of what God has allowed me to achieve has given me a new perspective on who I am, what I am capable of, and most importantly – who God is.

So lose the complaining! Stop underestimating yourself. No more “I can’t do it” or “I won’t make it.” Sing a new song! One that is clear and bright, full of optimism, faith, and expectancy! And realize that when you sing your song, many will be drawn to the light that they see in you, and they will come to trust in the same Power that is guiding and protecting you. And soon, they’ll have their own song.
